Thanks for the tips. It gives me some good food for thought and a basis for understanding how GEO flares work. For those interested, my equipment and methods are: I use a Meade ETX-125 telescope with "GOTO" and 76X magnification. I set it to Terrestrial Target mode so the motors will sit still and not follow the stars. I use Orbitron to give me the azimuth and elevation of the sats. Using the telescope controller, I point it at the sats and look for a stationary object against moving stars. Now that I have a better understanding of when and where to look, maybe my luck will get better.
