Historical background information and observational descriptions of
many objects still in orbit are available from a document titled
'ORBITING EARTH SATELLITE HISTORIES', compiled originally by
Ron Ballke of JPL.  It's available at:

If anyone knows of a more current version, please share it with us.
The highest catalog number referenced in the document is 20978,
launched in 1990.
