    Pierre's Twit-Twit:

The English name for this bird is blackbird (one word) and
its Latin name is Turdus merula hence the French name merle.

Of course not all black birds are blackbirds and not all
blackbirds are black; the females and juveniles are brown.

It is closely related to the North American Robin (Turdus
    migratorius) and similar in size.

I too have a tame one, a female, who takes food from my hand
and is already on her second nest this year. As the young
leave the nest before they can fly their survival rates are
low. Mine disappears around mid-September and returns at the
first severe weather in December or January. I'm not sure how
long they live for but this one is at least 7 years.
