    I assume that a good test for this would be to first see if that would cast 
    a shadow.
    Not too hard to test, but you would probably need a pretty dark sky site.
    
    As for the "cone of brightness", you can input coordinates west and east of 
    a flare centerline in H-A, etc. to see the degree of drop-off.
