04-20-01: 00:32:02 - Saw the ISS. 00:36:46 - Saw Iridium 40 make a flare, a -8 flare as observed from my location. WOW! The only way I can describe it is as a big, bright flashlight being shined in my face. This is by far the brightest flare I have ever observed. And the sun had barely set! I wonder what it would look like in a decently dark sky - and no nearby light pollution! Perhaps temporary blindness...... BTW, I have been reading "The Problem of Space Travel: The Rocket Motor". Incredible book! Written in 1929, it outlines the construction and operation of a space station. Many of the things the author says are amazingly accurate. As I saw replays of the Shuttle launch, I reflected on how his vision has come to pass, and more. Costs about $11 US via NASA. But since this is a government operation, you're going to have to wait about 6 weeks for it to arrive in the mail. ------------------------------ Jonathan T.
