Two rocket stage decays took place on April 27th:- Decay: 2000/04/27 13:18:00 -21.8 344.0 8.3399 23834 1996-019B US DELTA 2 R/B(1) 2000/04/27 14:40:00 Decay: 2000/04/27 10:42:00 41.9 277.1 0.0000 26302 2000-021B CIS SL-04 R/B 2000/04/27 11:12:00 A time that the South African had his close encounter would be useful to see which of these two rockets _could_ have been the culprit. The 1 metre sphere described maks a rocket stage more likely than a satellite, but thinking about the designs of these stages I cannot recall such a component being carried - certainly not a main propulsion tank. Recall a Delta-2 stage coming down over Texas a few years ago with both propellant tanks landing intact but nicely dented.
