It will please the flash period observers of the BWGS to hear that Tristan
Cools has just finished the 6th version of our database of photometric
periods of articificial satellites, the PPAS.

This 6th yearly updated of our archive now contains almost 39000 observations
by 140 observers of over 1300 satellites. The observations have been collected
between 1962 and 1996.

Notable additions for this version are another sizeable chunk (an additional
1500 observations) of archive of the late German observer Horst Koehnke and
the more than 3000 new observations the BWGS-observers have amassed in 1995
and 1996.

Tristan has also thoroughly cleaned up the ppas.rem file which contains
remarks too long to fit into our 80-column format, with appropriate indexing
from the ppas*.obs files.

The PPAS-archive is subdivided into 38 ASCII-files, one for each launch-year
since 1959. In addition a file with remarks (PPAS6.REM) is available, as well
as an introductory and explanatory text about the history of the PPAS, symbols
used, the PPAS-format, list of observers, etc...
