I'm a new subscriber so, as the moderator requests, here is a little
introduction...

Myself: The wife and I live in rural Virginia, USA where we are slaves to seven
cats, four horses, and a dog. I'm a computer programmer working at Aurora
Flight Sciences Corporation. Aurora designs, builds, and operates robotic
aircraft for very high altitude (70k to 100k feet) scientific research.

My interest in satellites: I had the priviledge of helping to build the science
payload for NASA's Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) satellite. I also got to
work on the Orfeus-SPAS payload which flew on the STS-51 mission. Since I'm out
of the satellite business I'm keeping my hand in by volunteering with the
Shuttle Amateur Radio EXperiment (SAREX). I'm one of nine "school mentors"
which help schools prepare to talk with a Shuttle astronaut via amateur radio.
SAREX flies on about half of the Shuttle missions these days. We've been
including Alan Bose's "There's a Satellite in your Backyard" booklet with the
material we send to the SAREX schools. Most of the schools selected for SAREX
contacts are in the elementary age group. This is a little young for
observational programs, but some of the teachers have been including satellite
observing into their teaching program. Send me email if you are interested in
trying to support a SAREX contact at a local school.
